I’ll start TMI Tuesday off with an atypically unrelated post. It has to do with a subtle insight I had a long time a go that I never really shared with anyone, but might be interesting to the audience of this post.
I was thinking, idly, about the travails of cleaning up semen after every completed masturbation session, and thought for a moment about the fact that female people don’t share this concern. I thought about the advantages of being able to masturbate more discreetly, such as under the covers, or more spontaneously, without needing to worry about clean-up supplies being on hand, or the danger of soiling various possessions. Overall, it’s a bit of a paranoia of mine, I guess, that others may come up on evidence of my own masturbation.
It’s in that moment that I thought about the similarity between male masturbation and female menstruation when I realized that the latter requires a similarly (if not more) cumbersome amount of effort to clean up. Sure, menstruation is cyclical and involuntary, but male ejaculation tends to revolve around shorter cycles, and can be a powerful force of habit. Finally, both bodily functions essentially involve the expulsion of unfertilized gametes — the sex cells known as eggs and sperm.
So, yeah, ejaculation and menstruation are more similar than you might have thought!
